DTV/HD

Don't sweat the switch to DTV

Enter an electronics store, and you're likely to be asked if you're looking for an 1080p HDTV with VOD, DTV and HD-DRV capabilities. If TV-speak makes your eyes glaze, here's a quick review of the terminology:

As the nation's living rooms are filling up with flat screens, HDTV is fast becoming the new standard. Advancements in technology now allow higher quality audio and video to be delivered to your screen.

On another channel, local broadcasters are preparing for the DTV transition. On February 17, 2009, television stations will begin broadcasting in digital signals only. You may have seen the commercials warning that your set might not work after that date, but what it boils down to is this - if you are a cable or satellite subscriber, or if you bought your TV in the last couple of years, you won't notice any obvious change.

The digital television switch will only impact the 12% of American households that rely solely on over-the-air signals for their TV viewing - the old fashioned sets that rely on rooftop antennae or "rabbit ears."

And while the DTV transition will allow stations to send HD signals over the air (and many will be), they are not required to begin broadcasting in high-definition as a part of the switch.
